UK Labour Market Insights | July 2023
Trends across the UK
- Across the country, unique job postings increased by +3.1% during June, compared to the previous month.
- The sectors that saw the largest month-on-month increase in job postings were Warehousing (+11.3%), Tourism, Leisure & Arts (+9.8%), and Transport Logistics and Supply Chain (+8.6%)
- Sectors which saw a decrease in job postings were IT (-2.3%) and Health & Social Care (-1.7%). Scotland, Wales and all regions in England except the North East and South East, have shown a decrease in these sectors.
- Overall claimant count across the UK has increased by +0.1% following a significant decrease in May by -3.1%.

London
- London was the only region in England to see a decrease in overall job postings (-0.5%).
- The largest month-on-month increase in job postings was seen in Construction and Labour (+4.5%) and Cleaning & Facilities Management (+4.1%)
- A larger decrease was seen in IT (-5.4%) and Health & Social Care (-4.9%) job postings than other regions.
- London was the only region that saw a decrease in warehousing related roles (-2.4%).
- The decrease of job postings in Health & Social Care related roles was largest in Barking and Dagenham & Redbridge (-21.6% and -21.4% respectively) while Waltham Forest and Enfield saw an increase of job postings in this sector (+8.4% and +9.8%).
- Claimant count in London has increased by 1.1%, the biggest increase compared to other regions nationally.
Scotland: Tayside and Lanarkshire
- Unique job postings in Scotland increased slightly by +0.2% compared to the previous month.
- The sectors which saw the largest growth were Warehousing (+9.5%) and Transport, Logistics & Supply Chain (+9.3%).
- There was a significant decrease (-10.6%) in IT related roles. Other sectors that saw a decrease in job postings were Business, Finance & Legal (-3.6%); Education & Training (-4.9%); Protective Services (-5.5%); and Sales & Marketing (-2.1%).
- Lanarkshire and Tayside saw job postings increase by +6.2%, with the strongest growth in Transport, Logistics & Supply Chain (+15.2%), Warehouse (+15.5%), Cleaning & Facilities Management (+13.5%), Catering & Hospitality (+12.6%) and Customer Service (+12.4%).
North West
- Unique job postings in the North West increased by +1.7% in June, a small increase in comparison to most regions in the country.
- The largest increases were in Tourism, Leisure & Arts (+10.9%) and Warehousing (+10.1)
- Protective Services job postings saw a significant decrease of -6.1%, the second largest decrease in this sector after Yorkshire and the Humber.
West Midlands
- Unique job postings in the West Midlands increased by +3.3% compared to May.
- All sectors except IT and Health & Social Care saw an increase in job postings with Tourism, Leisure & Arts (+16.2%) and Warehousing (+13.6%) leading the way.
- In Birmingham, there was a decrease of -8.8% in IT job postings, a significant decrease when compared to the average in England of -1.8%
- The decrease in Health & Social roles in Birmingham was also significantly higher than England’s average (-6.4% vs 1.8%)
- Claimant proportion of population in West Midlands has decreased from being the highest in England to the same level as London (4.9%).
Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire
- Unique job postings in East Midlands increased by +4.6%, which is amongst the biggest increases nationally.
- The increase in job postings Yorkshire and Humber was minimal at +1.2%.
- In West Yorkshire, there has been a big decrease in job postings in IT (-7.9%), Sales & Marketing (-3.8%) and Customer Service (-2.4%). Business, Finance & Legal, the largest sector in the region also saw a decrease of -2%.
- As well as aligning with the national trend with increases in Warehousing (+16.1%), Tourism, Leisure & Arts (+6.8%), and Transport Logistics and Supply Chain (+17%) Derbyshire saw a huge increase in Protective Services roles (+35.7%) and a large increase in Science and Engineering (11.2%).
- Nottinghamshire saw the largest growth in Construction and Labouring (+13.7%) and Retail (+12.8%).
Wales
- Unique job postings in Wales increased by +28.3% compared to the previous month.
- The sector which saw the largest increase in unique job postings was Sales and Marketing, where they increased by +37.5% compared to April.
- Following this, we also saw increases in Transport, Logistics and Supply Chain related roles (+37%) and Cleaning & Facilities Management (+35.7%) compared to the previous month.
- In Cardiff – which has a quarter of the job postings in Wales – the Retail sector saw the biggest rise in unique job postings (+35%) compared to April.
Surrey, Sussex & Hampshire
- Unique job postings in the region increased by +6% compared to the previous month, which was a large increase when compared to most regions nationally.
- South East England had the biggest increase nationally with all sectors seeing an increase in job postings. The region now has the highest number of job postings nationally and has surpassed London.
- Worthing saw the largest growth out of the regions (+13.6%). This was driven by growth and stability in all sectors except Protective Services (-14.7%) and Warehousing (-6.6%). The significant growth in IT of +28.5% bucked the national trend and impressive growth was also seen in Business, Finance & Legal (+27.5%).
