Trends across the UK
The number of payrolled employees was estimated to have risen by 3.9% in May 2022, compared to May 2021, increase of more than 1.1 million.
The biggest increase was in accommodation and food services (up 289,000), and England also saw catering and hospitality increase by 14.7%. However, Scotland and Wales only saw marginal growth in that sector.
Manufacturing and production decreased overall across the three nations, with Wales seeing the biggest drop of -3.7%.
London
- Unique job postings were up 2.4% month-on-month, at 31,966.
- Catering and hospitality saw a 11.9% rise, with 1,196 unique jobs posted. Other sectors with big increases in unique job posts were protective services (11%) and education and training (7.5%).
- Construction and labouring again saw the biggest drop in unique job postings, down by 6.5% following a 17% drop from the previous month.
Scotland: Tayside and Lanarkshire
- Scotland saw an increase of 5.3% in unique job postings, month-on-month.
- The IT sector was the biggest growth area in Lanarkshire, with a 35.7% increase in unique job postings in South Lanarkshire and a 41.2% rise in North Lanarkshire.
- Catering and hospitality sector job roles rose by 29.1% in Angus, while Perth and Kinross saw its warehousing sector go up by 27.3%. Dundee saw a 23.5% rise in education and training related unique jobs posts.
- Sales and marketing roles fell sharply in Angus (down 35.7%) and Perth and Kinross (down 27.8%). Job postings in the tourism and leisure sector fell by 18.9% in Perth and Kinross, 13.8% in Dundee and 5.1% in South Lanarkshire.
North West England: Cumbria, Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside
- Unique Job postings increased in all four counties in the North West, rising by an average of 5.5% month-on-month with a total count of 110,432 postings.
- Education and training performed strongly well compared to the previous month, with 13.3% more unique jobs posted. Health and social care saw a 10.4% rise and catering and hospitality a 9.7% increase.
West Midlands
- The West Midlands has seen an increase in job postings of 10.3%, recovering from a big drop in the previous month. There were 135,095 roles posted in May.
- Catering and Hospitality-related job postings rose by 18.8%, with Agriculture, Environmental & Animal care rising by 18.6% and Education & Training by 13.1%. No sectors faced a decrease in jobs posted.
Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire
- These areas saw an increase in unique job posts of around 4.9%, month-on-month with a total of 197,166 jobs posted.
- Sectors with the biggest increase in unique job posting were agriculture (10.5%), followed by IT and business, finance & legal — with rises of 9.5% and 8.9% respectively.
- Fewer job postings were seen in manufacturing & production (down 3.9%) and Science & Engineering (down 0.6%).
Wales
- Wales saw a 1.5% month-on-month increase in unique job postings, with a total of 84,359 positions.
- Sectors with the biggest increase of unique job posting were education and training (8.7%), IT (6.2%), and customer services (5.3%).
- There were fewer unique jobs posted in Tourism, Leisure & Arts (down 7.7%), Manufacturing & Production (down 3.7%), Cleaning & Facilities management and Construction & Labouring (down by 2.9%)
Surrey, Sussex & Hampshire
- Unique Job postings were 5.6% higher than last month, with 57,083 roles this month.
- Sectors with the biggest increase in unique job roles posted were agriculture, environmental and animal care (11.7%), followed by catering &hospitality and transport, logistics & supply chain (both 11.2%).
- There were fewer job postings in the manufacturing and production sector (down 4.6%) and the warehousing sector (down 4.2%).
